About Me

Joel Porter
I am currently a PhD researcher within the Creative Exchange at Lancaster University, part of the Lancaster Institute for Contemporary Arts. My research area is interested in the perception and fear of hidden data in collective and connective digital memory. It is now commonplace to see Google’s Street View cars capturing images that are shared online as a feature in Google’s online maps. Images of our streets and homes, and of people too, can be browsed by anyone online without our knowledge or consent. The lines between offline and online, and also private and public, are becoming increasingly blurred. This space is dedicated to a collection of these issues.
